ECHO READING
STRATEGY

PARENT READS WORDS CHILD REPEATS WORDS

Choose books that contain few words per page.

Move your finger under the words as you or child says them.

It is OK to help your child by using phrases such as:  “Copy Me”, or “Say what I Say”, (i.e.: example: “Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see?  Now you say it.”)

If your child is not able or is not willing to join in, just move on.  Don’t force your child to echo.

Accept all Attempts!

Echo Reading helps a child understand that the words in the book match the words that come out of our mouths.

This strategy can be used with a child as young as 18 months.
