EFFECTIVE READING
TECHNIQUES FOR YOUNG
CHILDREN

Allow your child to select some of the books you read.

Talk, about the different parts of the book, such as the front cover, back cover, title, author, beginning and end.

Read slowly (but don’t drag it out).

Allow your child to hold the book and turn the pages. Show your child how to turn one page at a time.

Change how your voice sounds by using lots of intonation, different voices for the characters, and excitement.

Repeat what the child says: and add words to make it a complete sentence, (i.e. example:

Child:  “Butterfly”

Parent:" Yes that is a beautiful butterfly.”)

Monitor your child’s face and behavior for signs that he is getting tired or bored.

Don’t force your child to sit and listen.  Keep reading time fun and stress free.
