On Tuesday, February 3rd the second annual dance for students in Freedom Acres Severely Cognitively Impaired classrooms was held in the gym. This year, the theme was tied to Valentine’s Day—thus the name “Sweetheart Ball.” It was a delightful time watching students, staff, and parents dance to “love songs” in their “evening wear.” Once again, the dance was a joint effort involving all students/programs at Freedom Acres. Carol Ritcheske, P.E. teacher, organized and coordinated the event with help from teachers and students.
Much advance preparation went into the dance. In P.E. class, Carol introduced the students to the tunes and different dances which were chosen for the dance. All SCI classrooms practiced, including Stephanie Brown’s SCI class at Rather. Next, invitations designed by Stephanie’s class were sent out. Other SCI classrooms helped to make the gym festive with wall decorations and the picture backdrop. Leigh’s classroom made frames for pictures that would be given to parents. Two Upper SEI students took pictures of the dance, while two Younger SEI students worked at the refreshment station. This dance was a Service Learning project for the A2 class. A2 students helped to decorate the gym, took digital pictures, and danced with the kids. One A2 student acted as the DJ for the dance and one welcomed guests at the registration table. Finally, the A2 class also trimmed the pictures and inserted them into the handmade frames.
The collaborative effort was a BIG SUCCESS! It was a great time for all involved. We would like to say “Thank You” to family members, Allen MacDonald, Scott Hubble, Bobbi Platte, and all others who took time out of their busy day to join us in the fun. We also appreciate, our principal, Terry Platte, for taking time out to lend his support and participate in the festivities. Thank you all!
