Supplemental Security Income The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program provides monthly payments to a child from birth to age 18 based on a disability or blindness. The child must have a physical or mental condition(s) that very seriously limits his or her activities and the condition(s) has lasted, or is expected to last, at least 1 year or is expected to result in death. SSI recipients are automatically eligible for Medicaid in Michigan. The income and resources of the parents and the child must also be within the allowed limits. Once a disabled child is age 18 or older, Social Security doesn’t consider the parents’ income and assets when determining eligibility for SSI. To apply, call toll free at 1-800-772-1213 between 7am and 7pm or visit the Social Security office at 50 College SE, Grand Rapids.
