At Heartlands we provide amazing opportunities to prepare our students for the next chapter of their lives. One focus of the curriculum is college and career readiness. In every program, our students are exposed to various careers available within their program area. Guest speakers visit the classrooms and present information about their careers. They explain the steps along the career path to be employable in the chosen profession.
In the Culinary Arts program, chefs demonstrate cooking techniques, and pastry chefs teach cake baking and decorating. Local law enforcement officers work with the Criminal Justice students on simulated traffic stops. Dentists, assistants, and hygienists come into our dental clinic and work on patients from our community. These experiences give the students a bird’s eye view of the professions in every program. Work Based Learning, Educational/ Business /Industry Visits, Interns & Job Shadows are required to round out all student’s experiences at Heartlands.
Our student services coordinator Beth Geldhof visits every classroom with her college 101 presentation. She helps the students understand the steps to follow to be successful in college. The Compass & entrance tests, applications, and the FASFA process are discussed. College representatives also present to our classes.
Soft skills, employability skills, time management, and leadership are topics in every program. Developing a student capable of exploring, planning, problem solving, and decision making guides them to be successful in the next chapter of their lives.
After 1 year at the career center 93% of CTE students are enrolled in college, working or serving in the military within one year of graduation.
Heartlands is honored to have the opportunity to educate the students of Ionia County. These students become our community contributors.
