Local State Farm Agents Committed to Ending Child Hunger in Ionia & Montcalm Counties
IM Kids 3rd Meal program is giving food insecure children access to food and the benefits that come from being well-nourished and ready to learn by providing nutritious, kid-friendly evening meals alleviating hunger when they are not in school. Four local State Farm agents (Rick Rogusky, Wendy Rode, Neil Brown, & Michael Culp) are committed to working with IM Kids 3rd Meal to end child hunger in Ionia and Montcalm counties. These four State Farm agents volunteer together each month and presented a $1000 check to the program on October 13, 2016. This is the second year that the four State Farm agents have volunteered together each month at IM Kids 3rd Meal. Their dedication to volunteering and monetary grant is an example of State Farm’s philosophy of giving back to community.
In Ionia County, 18.8% of children are food insecure (2950 children). Twenty-three percent of these children are not income eligible for the federal nutrition programs. This means 1 in 5 children are food insecure. In Montcalm County, 22.3% of children are food insecure (3280 children). Nineteen percent of these children are not income eligible for the federal nutrition programs. This means 1 in four are food insecure. Both counties are above the state average of 15.7% food insecurity. (Feeding America Meal Gap Map)
IM Kids 3rd Meal is meeting a need in our communities. It is a success because of the support and partnerships we have with community. As of May 2016, the program has served 123,640 meals to food insecure children using 7958 volunteers who have provided 13,199 volunteer hours to the program. The program hopes to add two more schools to the four currently served this year. The $1000 grant from State Farm will help us reach this goal.
“We truly enjoy being involved with the IM Kids 3rd Meal Program because it gives us an opportunity to make a positive difference in so many kids’ lives. Helping others is a big part of the culture at State Farm. It’s what we do every day. It not only feels good helping out, it’s always a bunch of fun.”–Rick Rogusky
