Retention

Hello,
I am interested in learning about how schools or districts deal with student retention. What kind of documentation or data do your teachers need before they retain a student? Who do they report it to? What if parents make the request? Any information about your process will help. Thank you

In the past in Saranac, teachers talked with the principal(s) about their concerns and their possible suggestion of retention. The teacher and the parent completed a Leights (spelling???) Retention Scale. I can't remember if they met to talk about the possiblity of retention before completing these scales or how the idea was presented to the parents. Then, they met to discuss the results of the scales and make a final decision together.

Let me know if you would like to correct spelling of the Retention scale or any additional information about it.

Linda, I have a copy of the Light's Retention Scale. If you would like to review it, let me know. We, in Ionia, use it as an informal guide to assist in the decision making process. We do not have an abundance of teachers that request retention. John D.

Thank you Trisha and John for your responses. I have not checked back in for awhile. I have a copy of the Light's Scale. I was hoping for more guidelines and steps or documentation that might be required of a teacher proposing retention of a student. I'm wondering if there are any districts with a written policy? Thanks for your info. Linda
