Severely Cognitively Impaired (SCI) Program Overview

Program Description

The SCI (Severe Cognitive Impairments) Program at Freedom Acres serves students aged 3 to 26 with severe cognitive impairments or severe multiple impairments. The program provides long-term, individualized support focused on preparing students for post-secondary life and community integration.

Instructional Focus

Instruction is highly individualized and aligned with each student’s IEP. Core instructional domains include:

  • Functional Academics

  • Communication Development

  • Adaptive Behavior

  • Mobility and Physical Access

  • Daily Living and Adult Transition Skills

Service Delivery

Students receive instruction in a structured, supportive environment with access to a full range of related services, including:

  • Speech-Language Pathology

  • Occupational Therapy

  • Physical Therapy

  • School Social Work

  • VI Consultant (Visual Impairment)

  • Orientation and Mobility Services

  • DHH Consultant (Deaf/Hard of Hearing)

Program Setting

Freedom Acres, Ionia ISD’s center-based facility, is designed to meet the complex needs of students requiring intensive support. The program serves learners across five local education agencies (LEAs), providing equitable, high-quality services in a Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) whenever possible.
